My dad was born in San Prisco. Our
family name is Iannotta but it changed when my grandparents came through
Ellis Island. I became Iannotti so the story goes. I have tried to spot it
on a map but am unable to find it. I would appreciate any and all info on
San Prisco because I may visit some day soon. My dad is to old to travel
now but I wish to go back to his roots and meet my extended family.
I was the one who initially sought info on San Prisco. My dad came here as
a child and settled in New Haven. He later became a big time boxer in the
30s and 40s winning the junior featherweight title and being a lightweight
contender. Dad boxed many great fighter including 6 champions included:
Willie Pep(Guglielmo Papaleo, Harry Jeffra(Pasquale Giuffi), Lulu
Constantino Pablo Dano, Johnny Compo(Johnny Compagnano)Al Reid. JUst to
name a few. Dad boxed in Madison Square Garden many times.
Dad boxed most of his career as a featherweight, but yet fighting in
higher weight classes. THis is something the fighters did in those days,
you had to keep busy to make money. I can send you photos and articles
about dad if you like.
One of dad's trainers was the great featherweight, lightweight champion
Johnny Dundee(Giuseppe Carrora). Dad was also friends with a lot of the
New YOrk Yankees. Marius Russo a yankee pitcher, and good friend of dads
owned part of dad's contract.
I would appreciate any correspondence, photos, post cards and info on San
Prisco. Would it be possible to look up the family name locally and see if
the Iannotti name appears in local listings. Is San Prisco rural country
setting, a small town, or a busy community?... I am trying to remember
my grandmother's maiden name, I think it was Abate but i'm am not sure. I
will check with my father and get back to you. My grandfather and
grandmother were both from San Prisco on my father's side. On my mother's
side they are from Bergamo. The name is Dell'angelo, and she married a
Luigi Gasparini and enter the U.S. from the port of Genoa. Growing up my
mother and father spoke different dialects, we learned both living in the
home. My grandfather was Rafael Iannotti, he had a brother Frank Iannotti.
My mother said nonna's last name was Abbate. She
had one blind sister.
Tanti saluti
Ralph Iannotti |
Mio padre è nato a San
Prisco.
Io
sono diventato Iannotti, e i conti tornano. Ho provato a localizzare San
venire a visitarlo.
(Pasquale Giuffri), Lulu Costantino, Pablo Dano, Compo (Johnny Compagnano),
leggeri, Johnny Dundee (Giuseppe Carrora).
presente nelle liste locali?
Crescendo
mia madre e mio padre si trovarono a parlare dialetti diversi, e noi,
vivendo con loro, li imparammo entrambi. Mio nonno era Raffaele Iannotti,
aveva un fratello, Francesco Iannotti. Mia madre dice che il cognome di
mia nonna era Abbate. Aveva una sorella cieca. Tanti saluti, Ralph Iannotti. |
